I remember exactly what I was doing, I wonder if that is what it was like for most people? For the left coast desert (Desert Hot Springs) it was a strange summer weather wise lots of rain. I was visiting and helping my dad who was doing outside renovations in exchange for rent on a house. I was 16 and most of that summer was spent inside eating because of weather and gained 30 pounds. I believe word of his death came in on the afternoon news.

I was training a couple of cheap NJ breds at Overbrook Farm. A girl groom down the shedrow from me had a radio on and the announcement came across on that. I was never an Elvis fan but I had older siblings who grew up in the 50s and idolized him. My thoughts turned immediately to them and how they would take the news.

Piggy Wiggly is a supermarket chain, most of their stores are in small towns in the South.

I was out of college, but still living at home at the time in Indianapolis, where he had given his last concert (at Market Square Arena, which was torn down in 2001) that past June. I still remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. The forty years since encompassed my entire working life. Hardly seems possible.

I was driving to work on the Long Island Expressway, going to short-lived Parr Meadows QH track in Yaphank, when I heard the news.
"Can't Help Falling in Love" the best Elvis song for me.

I was in the car with my parents waiting to turn onto the road that lead to our house when news came over the radio that he had died.
My one brush with Elvis:
Elvis waved to me from his limo after a concert at Nassau Coliseum. I was a little kid...and ducked down in my seat when he did it...it was one of those "pope waves" with the thumb, pointer and middle finger raised.
No, we didn't see the show, but my mom used to like to make my dad go to the Coliseum and camp out by where Elvis would exit the building and go into his limo after the show, and then we'd use to follow his car for a while. I guess it was an early form of stalking...LMAO
Sometimes they had a decoy limo and my dad would follow the wrong one, but this one time he had it right...

I was in Bronson Missouri, we were in line waiting to get into Silver Dollar City and their employee told us. We were in a 1962 Buick station wagon that had no radio.

Back then, the networks would have a one minute or so news summary in between some of their prime time shows. My brother and I were watching MASH when the news summary came on and that was the lead headline.
