During the running of the race some tracks have little chicklets showing each horse position. Are these from Trakus information? Occasionally a horse is not shown or looks like it is manually adjusted as it makes it to current position.

Yes, those are from Trakus, at least at tracks that employ Trakus. There is also a fairly new GPS system in place at several tracks that does the same thing.

Trakus uses a satellite system, right?
If so, it seems logical that a local system would be more accurate.

No, I think they use radio transmission.
The new GPS timing systems, run by this group, uses satellites. It seems better than Trakus but it still has a margin of error and isn't perfect by any means. But what system is?

Tracks could sanity check timing using a simple video system. Or use it as primary
Do the same thing CJ is doing with one video feed, but set it up this way.
Have a video feed with a camera at the start pole, and finish pole. Add the internals if you like.
Multiple cameras displayed on one screen
Timestamped
Have some $15 an hour guy log the timestamps in slow motion
Simple subtraction
Perfect timing

I was watching some stakes race replays at GP this afternoon. The fractions for a couple of races made no sense at all. It looked like a run up issue. I just turned the page and said "let CJ take care of it".

but give me
- the trakus (or Total Performance) Data...
- and, a decent programmer
and I could manage the construction of a model that flags 'meaningful' ground-loss, and a model that flags 'significant' race-flow patterns.
I believe that those would be useful tools.

With Trakus I worry a bit about the ground loss that is reported. It is better than nothing, but I've seen some pretty big errors along the way. It probably would be a valuable addition but I'd have to learn to trust it. I certainly don't trust the timing with good reason.
With TPD, we don't really know. Nobody seems to have public access right now, though some people obviously do and I'm sure they are using it. I would. That doesn't really seem fair to the betting public since it is being used as official timing at several tracks. I can't find a link to buy it anywhere. I would hope it would be provided and soon.
