What happened to trials?

I noticed years ago many races would have trials which would act as preps. What happened to most of them? The only "well-known" trial I know of is the Derby Trial which the last time a horse won the trial and went to run in the Kentucky Derby was Don't Get Mad who came in fourth in 2005. Does anyone know of other trials that might be out there?

how about The Fountain of Youth for The Florida Derby, and The Jim Dandy for The Travers Stakes.

When I say a trial, I mean one that is less than five days from the main event. Like what the Derby Trial used to be. I know there are tons of preps like the Peter Pan for the Belmont or the CCAO for the Alabama.

Today, the trials would have to be at least 5 weeks out from the race.
Maybe more.

changing times have thwarted trials.

Not sure that there were ever very many Tbred trials at major tracks. (For QH futurities and derbies, in order to winnow down fields, yes.) The old NY area Tbred futurities with huge fields were run on wide straightaways that allowed for all those interested and invested to start.

In fact, other than compiling their dates, I haven't really studied the old Derby Trials all that much. There was one run in 1909 at CD, sixteen days after the KD, so who knows what that was all about. They sorta became a fixture, beginning in 1924.

maybe

some years back, workouts at Fairgrounds listed trial or baby, non-betting races but someone may remember better than myself how accurate a statement I just made...embellish my memories of this please, and maybe say why they don't occur anymore...

In Australia, as those of you who wager on races there know by now, there are many, many trials available for horses returning from layoff or injuries, or even just tuning up for a race.

another point too is that the majority of the trials were for state bred horses/races.

In 1948, Saggy beat Citation by a length in the Chesapeake Trial, a prep five days before the Chesapeake Stakes. Citation finished the year with 19 wins in 20 starts, and at the time the internet was flooded with people declaring that trials should be abolished. In the 1970s, there was a resurgence in trials, but this time they involved race fixing.

You just won the Internet. Go to the IRS sign up window and sign the proper forms to collect your winnings.
