Do companies send you an offer sheet when you get a job offer?

So sick of being underpaid at my company. We have a major project starting up in 2 weeks and all mgrs are stressed that we are understaffed so i thought this would be a good time to tell them I have another job offer and am leaving. My plan worked, as my boss said, "What if I can get you $10,000 more"? Which would put me at what everyone else in my group is making. To make a long story short for the last week they have been trying to get signoff. I just got a call from the big boss saying, "Okay you are all set, all we need is a copy of the offer sheet from the new job!".. Kind of a backfire. Not really sure how to go forward on this. I know some people would say its unethical to lie about having a new job, but for the amount of work I do, and for the amount I get, I don't really care. Have to fight to get ahead.
Do all jobs send an offer sheet? THey asked if they could have it emailed which I thought was odd.

Tell them that you dont make it a practice of giving out private information and it wouldnt be fair to the other company to reveal who they were. Tell them that you're a loyal guy and you respect the other companies privacy and that their offer is all you can say about it at this time.

Also, why would a company who was a competitor to your current company send your current company any information about private negotians you've had with them?

Here's a thread on a message board that was discussing a similar situation to yours.

not necessarily is there always an offer sheet. depends on the situation. I'd tell them it's none of their business and that it wouldn't be ethical to disclose those details. you're kind of out on a limb here though, hopefully you have thought this through.

Thanks, pretty interesting. Its just going to be awful if i have to go back with my tail between my legs and continue to work there. I hope they won't expect me to put it any effort but the absolute minimum. They hired 2 new people off the street at $7,000 more than what im making now. Just a slap in the face. I have to do all the work and fix all their errors. I think the company made something like $17 billion last year.

I left myself an out. I never said i was leaving. I told my boss that I was thinking about it but I am on the fence. I never went in asking for more money, she was the one that offered it.

I think the key is this. The way they are thinking is that if you really did have a 10k more offer, why not just put in your 2 weeks notice and leave? Why would you even bother going thru the aggrivation of trying to get more money from them?

Zips,

I would go looking for a head hunter to get you a better offer for real.

If you are on a work computer while considering this, you may be screwed anyway...

THIS is a great point.

But, if not, here's another idea to ponder.

Compose an e mail to 'Bill' or a made up name and say this:

Bill,

Im very happy at your offer of X dollars per year. im seriously considering your generous offer and i'm on the verge of putting my 2 weeks notice into my current job.

Signed,
Zipster.

Than, you 'mistakenly' send this to your current boss and then 5 seconds after you send this e mail, send another one saying "oops, sorry, sent this to the wrong addy, disregard previous e mail"

Just Spoke To Boss

I'm home I'm off today

I just spoke to my boss. She said, "Between me and you, you got the extra money. They just want something in writing so they don't think you are pulling their leg" She said all they want is an email or something, it doesn't even have to be in writing. It can be on an email

I thought about making up the email but really nervous they will check and I will get fired. I don't think they will check, but not sure.

ANd Dave, I've been dealing with a headhunter forever. No jobs out there

Your best course of action is to just say that you dont want to talk about private negotiations with other companies, sorry for the inconvieniences.

I would recommend to not send a fraudulent e mail pretending to be some other company.

Ya I'm not that crazy. My boss pretty much said with the email/letter I'm all set, and without it, it won't be approved. So ridiculous.
