Does poker really require players to pass physical chips back and forth between each other?

Maybe time for some out of the box thinking? --

Players use a cashier app to buy virtual chips.

An actual dealer still shuffles the deck, deals the cards, and maintains the cadence of the game.

But the dealer also controls an app to track and display virtual chips as they are bet during each hand... The app also displays total amt in the pot, and distributes the pot once the dealer declares the winner of each hand.

I don't know --

Could something like that be workable?

Casinos tried electronic tables 15 years ago. Players hated them.

Poker players, again, especially fish, are incredibly superstitious and quick to assume rigging.

I am way more optimistic about racing than casinos even though the two are so closely tied in many cases because of purses.

The number of horse players that play from home via computer or via phone is enormous. I enjoy the on track experience, but if I couldn't go or if there were no betting machines/tellers available and social distancing was enforced it wouldn't be any issue for me at all except at places like Saratoga.

Belmont's grandstand is enormous, extremely under utilized, and it also has a huge back yard outside. Even if you didn't want to social distance you would. For racing it's just a matter of keeping the workers safe. There's no problem betting.

To me, it's seems close to impossible to go to a casino and feel like you can have the experience you want. There's way to much exchange of money, chips, close interaction, etc... How do you eliminate all that and still have a similar experience?

L.A. County is apparently extending it’s stay at home order through July.

No word on what this mean for Santa Anita, which is hoping to resume racing this Friday.

I think Santa Anita management may be talking itself into a kind of civil disobedience position that could end very badly for them. Taking entries while you are still trying to convince the health department to let you reopen is the sort of thing that can piss off the regulators and extend the shutdown.

You are probably correct. It's obviously not about science or economics.
A quarter of a mile east of the track I can play golf on the county course and a quarter mile west I can stroll through the county Arboretum.
Of course a quarter mile north I still can't play tennis or hit balls against a wall for practice at Newcastle Park (city run). We shall know soon enough.

That seems rather extreme in the opposite direction from what I've been arguing in other threads. The data can change dramatically in just a few weeks as we are seeing in NYC now. They should make these decisions based on data every 2-3 weeks after changes are made to the openness of the state. We aren't even halfway through May yet and they are already talking about July?

I am really sick of the arboretum talking point, which has been distributed by horse racing advocates.

The arboretum doesn't have betting lines. It doesn't have concession lines. It doesn't have a stable area and a paddock where tons of people come in contact.

It has plants. A bunch of plants. Which people sit and look at or picnic among.

If horse racing leaders think it is such a brilliant argument to keep repeating how the arboretum is open, I'm sorry, but we deserve to stay closed. It's transparently dishonest and it makes us look stupid.

You are quite correct that I am just a name on a horse racing board (although it is easy enough to figure out who I am).

But I know what a good argument is, and "the arboretum gets to open" makes us look like idiots.

Santa Anita has been closed almost two months. It's pretty obvious the health officials don't want to hear about how they opened the arboretum. And we have to supplicate to those people if we want to see horse racing there.

The point is, it isn't comparable to a racetrack. Santa Anita is closed for reasons that have no application to arboretums.
