I'm not sure "handling the surface" is the term I'd use, but showing speed on the rail at KEE that day against weak horses was certainly different than the track and race conditions he faced yesterday, especially given that Charlatan came back loaded. The scary part is that Baffert said Charlatan was not 100% for the race. Who knows if he'll be quite as effective stretching out when pressed, but he's one hell of a sprinter/miler.
