Exercise Rider Juan Becerra Cortes Dies After Fall From Horse At Belmont Park
Juan Becerra Cortes, an exercise rider for Steve Asmussen, has died after falling from a horse at Belmont Park Nov. 8, the Daily Racing Form reported.
Asmussen assistant Toby Sheets told DRF Becerra Cortes fell during a gallop over the training track. Sheets said the rider was unconscious and had blood on his brain. He was not stepped on or kicked by any horses and the horse he was riding was not injured, the report states.
A source familiar with the incident said Becerra Cortes lost consciousness while aboard the horse, which led to the fall.
The rider was hospitalized and placed on life support, but his family chose to remove him from life support Monday.
Becerra Cortes was to turn 44 years old on Saturday.
“He was a super good guy. He did everything without being asked,” Sheets told DRF.
