Fierceness at Saratoga

Fierceness (Repole owned, City of Light, Pletcher - I Ortiz ) at Saratoga yesterday looked the part. Race was for 2YO colts.

Won a 6 F MSW time of 109 3/5 by 11 lengths. ( track designated muddy)

All on the lead, albeit it did appear the surface was kind to speed on the day.

The filly and mare allowance race next race looked like a fairly good race went at 109 4/5. ( track designated sloppy)

Overall a very good effort that got accolades on the Fox broadcast.

Haven't seen any speed figures for the race yet.

Let's hope he has a better career than Hidden Scroll, another horse that was hyped off a very fast big win on a speed favoring sloppy track.

He ran a super race earning a 105 BSF for the effort. This will be fun watching his road to the kentuvky derby. Hope he is able to stay sound

He was impressive, but I'm going to take a contrarian opinion and say he was very good but not quite as good as the figure suggests. IMO, the surface was kind of strange that day.

All the speed figures i saw were pretty much the same for this race. The race that had the most divergent opinion was the next day sprint with a BSF of 111. TFUS 120, and Sheets 0". Or fast, slower, and real fast, for Elite Power.

On the other hand, colts who ran fast in the juvenile, have not necessarily done well making it to the Derby:

2014 Texas Red: 104 BSF, injury out of derby

2010 Uncle Mo: 108, illness out of derby

2007 War Pass 113, injury out of derby

2006 Street Sense 108 won derby.

I don't think there's any problem with the figure for the Fierceness race.

I'm less sure about how the track was playing, the relationships between the fractions and final times and which path(s) were best. I think he may have gotten the absolutely perfect trip/pace for an already good horse to maximize his number.

There has been a wide range of opinions on how fast Elite Power has been all year. In some way, those back opinions probably fed into the opinions about the BC Sprint.
