Atlantic City Racecourse was granted a six-date thoroughbred meet between April 28 and May 3; the Meadowlands Racetrack was granted a 141-date harness meet with racing all year except September; and Freehold Raceway was granted a 168-date harness meet, with no racing in July.

The racing commission has the authority to amend the schedule when the winds change, but Commissioner James G. Aaron said he was infuriated that everything was still up in the air.

This is not entirely true.
Both The Meadowlands and Freehold Raceway have designs on drastically fewer dates according to the NJ Standardbred Owners and Breeders Association.

I'll await the final decisions from the NJ Racing Commission before voting a thumbs up or down, but right now the calls for a "bridge loan" for purses from the state legislature doesn't seem to be in the cards for next year. Hopefully that situation will change in the coming weeks.

Apparently yes. Horsemen do not want to race there.

Ultimately when (not if) the casino is built, they'll want to supplement purses at Monmouth through The Meadowlands.

Imagine that. Chances of that happening hits a bump in the road if either track is sold to a private operator.

Atlantic City Race Course, owned by Greenwood Racing, again applied for six days of turf racing from April 28-30 and May 1-3. This year’s six days produced strong growth in pari-mutuel handle and attendance, and track officials indicated a desire to add dates—if more purse money is made available.

Horsemen are interested in having 10 days in the spring and 10 days in the fall at Atlantic City to complement the Monmouth meet, but the track won't offer such a schedule without a purse supplement.

I'm all in favor of resurrecting Atlantic City race course and having it play a bigger role during the year. The funding from the state must help both Aycee and Freehold in the short-term.

Once again you haven't heard from the NJSEA, wonder why that is? Look for a similar MP boutique meeting to be ok'd by the horseman right around the middle of February with a bit earlier start in May. The big issue will be where is the money going to come from to pay for this meet?

It doesn't matter if they offer one day a week racing or seven, they are going to get clobbered next year.
