I think the most iconic race caller is Larry Lederman. I just wished he was more involved in thoroughbred races then the trotters.

In regards to Vic Stauffer I think he is an excellent race caller. I have always wanted to meet him since his days at Hollywood Park. Seems like a nice down to earth guy. I have even invested in his picks and he knows the California circuit very well and explains each pick. I feel bad that he thinks I am a troll on here when I am anything but that type of person. Anyway I pay close attention when he is on TVG because he has a lot of good info and stories. Thanks Vic even though you don’t like me. I will still buy into your picks and good luck in Vegas handicapping contest.

To me, Trevor, whatever you think of his calls, is iconic:

"And away they go!"

"Moving like a winner"

"They'd have to sprout wings"

"Homeward bound"

"On the grandstand side"

"Out where he likes to be"

"Scraping the paint"

"Is being asked to run and he's responding!"

"The more they asked, the more he gave"

Having said that, Vic at Hollywood Park was one of the best I have ever heard. And he is obviously a superb handicapper too.

Trevor probably had the most catchphrases (i.e., things he had to say every race). How the fact that Grunder and Battaglia are two and three in that category reflects on Trevor I'm not sure...

Is he calling races currently? I had lost track of Larry.

He was diagnosed with brain cancer six or seven years ago. Amazingly enough, he's done some "guest" announcing since then.

Anybody know who filled in for Vic today at Oaklawn? He sounded similar but it certainly wasn't him

EDIT: Its Jim Byers of Lone Star Park fame

Byers and Stauffer are friends. They are both former Hollywood Park announcers.

He called the Meadowlands one night in December, and I believe I've heard him recently at Freehold too. He sounds close to the same as he did 25 years ago, which is amazing considering everything he's been through both healthwise and elsewhere in his life.

From the calls I've heard, be amazed if Oaklawn has him back next year.
Maybe they don't care.
For you people that idolize him, thank god for YOUTUBE!!!
