I spent many years working at Hollywood Park, beginning in 1977 with Bobby Frankel and then Jerry Hollendorfer. It was the best track to train at and we were able to train there and run anywhere in the country. I never had a problem in the area and we’re talking about almost 40 years around Inglewood.

I had my largest winning bet at Hollywood Park wagered at Canterbury.

A $1.00 superfecta that cost $48 and paid $17,000.

Twelve horse field, favorite was 7-2. The four horses were 6-1 to 8-1. I don't remember the finish order.

Superfectas were new then and nobody knew how to play them, including me. Luck sometimes beats skill.

To get from Florence and Normandie to Century and Prairie, you need to drive several miles- south past Manchester to Century, and then west past Crenshaw all the way out to Prairie.

South Central LA is poor. Inglewood is a mix of working and middle class.

They are very different places.
That post is dead on balls accurate.

I can personally attest to that. Yes it's 4 miles but it seems like another world. Hell in Overtown in Miami it can change in one block. The construction of the 105 freeway was a very big deal to many people. It allowed people to circle around and come into the track on Prairie rather than across from the 110 on Florence, Manchester (the worst) or Century. But even though that's scary it's a f-ing walk in the park compared to being on the East side of the Harbor Freeway. That boys and girls is Watts. A VERY dangerous place for all races, creeds, colors and handicapping abilities.

13 minutes in no traffic.

So if poor people live 4.2 miles away, that makes a neighborhood poor?

The wealthiest people in the Hollywood Hills live less than 4 miles away from ratty parts of east Hollywood.

Hollywood Park's neighborhood was fine. Still is.

You and I both know "WATTS" wasn't much of a problem for Hollywood Park for at least 5 years before their demise.

Tell the truth at least 50% of the time.

I understand what you say is correct, and I'm sure it was correct when I made my post 2 years ago.

I miss Hollywood dearly as a bettor. The last couple years I seldom got into any prolonged slumps there, and had numerous outstanding runs. I was in the midst of one when I joined this forum. I was running hot, and was jonesing for any kind of horse racing related intercourse, and came across this place.

A great example of how a caller doesn't really influence where a serious player plays is the fact that I appreciated Vic's calls at Hollywood greatly, but not enough to get out of my comfort zone and play Oaklawn. As impressed as I've been with Vic as a horse player and as a positive contributor to this forum, and as much as I'd love to hear him in SoCal again, it won't influence me one way or another whether I'll play there or not. The loss of Wrona, which I'm sad about, won't curtail my activity at Santa Anita one bit. Frank M., who's calls I also appreciate, doesn't influence me one way or the other either.

Same here. I think Wrona is extremely good, but his absence isn't going to affect me one bit in terms of going to Santa Anita. I went to Hollywood plenty of times when Milo Perrins, who was terrible, and Don Alexander, not much better, were announcing.

The thing was, Hollywood finally did get it right with Vic, and we got a decade and a half of a guy with a pleasant voice, accurate calls, and tons of enthusiasm for the sport. So even I, who says in the end announcers don't matter that much, can say he improved my experience at the track.

Where in the HELL did I say WATTS had ANYTHING to do with Hollywood Park?

I chimed in when people were talking about South Central Los Angeles.

Try not to be an asshole at least 50% of the time.

For many years there were places right across the street for horse racing related intercourse.

I think you might have wanted to say discourse?

incorrect if you really knew anything. R.D. Hubbard had a room at Hollywood Park that nobody would want to use a black light in. that's the truth.

Count me as one who misses Hollywood and Vic's calls. Looking forward to Oaklawn and your race calling there. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season. Don't let the basturds get you down.
