Del Mar used to be even shorter before 1991 or so!

I read the post as having BC handicapping implications, but I could be wrong.

I wanna see a tides chart.

Maybe before 1971. The only track changed was the turf course.

Here you go:

https://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks...h/tides/latest

According to this (and if I have any clue as to what I'm looking it) - the two days of the BC seem to be days of the widest extremes between the high and low tides, with the highs coming closer to first post and the lows towards the end of the card.

If I remember the theory correctly (and it was espoused by a noted SoCal handicapper - which obviously doesn't make it automatically correct) - the high tides will cause the dirt track to play towards the outside and closers, and the low favors the rail and speed (as the moisture is drawn out of the track from below).

YMMV.

Not true. When they rebuilt the grandstand and introduced the Pacific Classic, they moved the finish line farther down the stretch. Before that, 1 1/4 miles was an about distance (the "Crosby Course").

Here's the 1991 Pacific Classic, where they had both finish lines set up. You can see the old one, followed by the new one, starting at 0:32:

I looked on the MVR web site and couldn't find the stretch distance.

Keep in mind Oaklawn has 2 finish lines with mile races ending at the 1/16th pole.

yea
big deal as it's listed in places as shortened from 1155 to 825 feet.

lot of implications

Laurel Park has a cool one - '1 mile' uses the '2nd finish line'.
Normal stretch distance listed = 1,089 feet goes to - 1,419 feet.

Yes - just add/subtract 330 ft (=110 yards=1/2 furlong=1/16 of a mile) with any of these cases.

You are absolutely correct. I was thinking in terms of changing the actual size of the track. I looked at some old forms I have and the stated stretch distance was 832 before the switch.
