Now we will see if desperation sets in.

Thousand Words, who is 19th on the KY Derby points list, worked a bullet 5f today at Santa Anita, best of 41 and best by over a full second over a list that included Grade 1 winners Ollie's Candy, Bellafina, Storm the Court and Combatant. He's had 3 works since his Oaklawn disaster, wonder if that's enough to toss into at least the Woody Stephens or even the Belmont at the 11th hour. More likely going for the Los Alamitos Derby where he had his biggest win in the Futurity.

Also, Eight Rings finally worked back from his own disaster at Oaklawn. Further down on the points list, but perhaps he can gather enough momentum to be an also-ran in the Kentucky Derby.

Or will Baffert simply buy into a horse to stay relevant come September 4.

At any rate, this is what is referred to in the industry as "wastage".

Amazing that Baffert had four potential 'Big Guns' and now a different story. This game can be brutal, at times even for the elite trainers.

Sort of a vicious circle. Game is brutal to a large extent because of elite trainers (i.e. those in control of 100 horses or more).

If these 4 or 5 horses each were in a different barn perhaps they all would have faced each other in CA multiple times leading up to the SA Derby instead of the 'divide and conquer' strategy employed by Baffert to have as many Derby prospects (and pre-retirement stud deals) as possible come Derby day.

Depends on your perspective.

Certainly not conducive to supporting a fan base for the sport.
