Gotta be careful of Smith doing a silly "all in" move at the 1/2 mile pole; hopefully Velasquez will keep a cool head.
Regarding the pace, ass a far-fetched possibility I worry about Risk Taking. I was floored that Brown called an audible particularly because he carefully separated Highly Motivated and Crowded Trade for the Derby and Preakness, he had already entered Risk Taking in the Peter Pan, and the horse is coming off a horrendous race.
Despite not having any prior efforts on the pace, I wonder if he is meant to show more speed here, perhaps in an effort to set things up better for Crowded Trade. Risk Taking has worked sharply since the Wood, registering both his fastest 1/2 mile and 5-furlong work in his career. In the Wood itself, he broke sharply but was held under restraint off the pace. The rider had to keep him under stout restraint halfway down the backstretch before he settled.
Most of the Medaglia d'Oros are one-paced types that do better on or near the lead anyways.

One thing I noticed on the brisnet pp's for the Preakness is that despite similar times for their most recent half mile, CT's was rated +14 to par for the 1st call while MS was -6, so how souped up was CD on derby day?

Drf track variant was only 04.
Horses were gaining early in the day and then the scrapers came out.

Looks like a reasonably good field.
Some value vs the morning line.
I don't think it's a dream betting race, but it's playable.

Don't know about the field quality but concur on other notes. I do wonder if Baffert ponies will be overlays messing up some of that non-chalk value given the quantity of Baffert indigestion lately. I know I'll make a win bet or two against the chalk but if chalk odds float up then would consider a cheap saver wager.

it's an awful field. can't remember a worse one.
anything over 1/2 on media spirit might be a stretch. he could easily win by over 5L if he's not tired.

I just want Medina Spirit to win so there would be interest for The Belmont.

I've heard it both ways now, where some are saying that a win by Medina Spirit would 'vindicate' Baffert, and some are saying that Bob wants off this Medina Spirit Turkish Airlines plane, right now!
Bob's got both aces and he appears to control the paces.
If you think in terms of time, there's no reason to type in rhyme.
something like that, Anyway- treat the Baffert pace as an 'entry' of sorts

You’re talking about screams of illegitimacy from the rafters if this horse wins the Preakness and heads into the Belmont. If he wins the Triple Crown......I cannot imagine the outright protests

Aye!
For the betterment of racing, Medina has to either lose the Preakness or withdraw.

I agree, might be the worst Preakness field ever!

In the 1968 Derby Dancer's Image was DQ'd after testing positive for Bute. Forward Pass was declared the winner and after he won the Preakness it provided an interesting scenario for the Belmont. Would he be a legit TC winner? Stage Door Johnny took care of that problem. This one would be similar .

100% unacceptable.
The second sample EXISTS.
Why the HELL has it not been tested????
Should have been done already and the results known.
There is no integrity in this shitty game. None.
Three car monte on the corned outside a bar have a better reputation.
I hope we get biblical rains and wind and the races are cancelled.
