The racing Gods taketh the giveth
I experienced the yin and yang of this game Saturday 4/29.
Belmont race 9 6f turf. I bet #1 Chamois and the #3 Bajan Summer both $20 to win. Chamois broke on top and led in the stretch until the #2 Power Nap passed him like he was standing still---but the 2 bumped him into the rail.
Stewards took him down, but placed him third because the #12 Aktabantey passed the staggered #1.
Chamois was 6-1.
I thought, in my disappointment, that these even out in the end, don't they?
Churchill Downs same day, race 9. I did not watch because it was after 9PM.
The results were 4/5/3.
I bet the #3 En Hanse $20/40 WP.
The #5 was taken down, the 3 moved up and the place price was $9.80.
Chamois would have paid a minimum of $140 for my twenty, but En Hanse paid $196.
I'm sure we've all experienced the taketh and the giveth, but probably not in the same day.
I played five races at CD. I bet 2 horses in one race, both lost and one horse wp on the other 4. they all placed and paid $9.00, 9.80,4.60, and 5.40.
So I did not have a horse that won and made a $220 prifit.

Yes..."it all evens out in the end". But not necessarily in this lifetime.
Be glad that it worked out nicely for you...this time.

Not the same day, but last week I made a nice hit in New York when a horse that was going to beat me bolted. I would have had the exacta box as a saver, but instead got the 6 to 1 winner and somehow the other hung on for second so had the exacta too.
Yesterday involved the same race the OP mentioned. I had an exacta box of the 1-2 and it looks like for all the world with 100 yards to go it will be 2-1, the 2 comes over and fouls the 1, and of course another horse manages to squeeze in between them. The 2 gets DQed but of course that is no help, since they simply move him behind the 1 and the new results was 12-1-2.
Such is the game we play. I can safely say I don't think I've ever been put up in one of those spots where my horse wasn't involved in the inquiry, but I've been in those no win kind of inquiries several times. Those will never even out.

I must have been "put up" too many times in my previous life. It's all evening up now.
Was alive in late p4 yesterday with 1-2-3.

It never ever evens out. I've been DQ'd 2 times in same day multiple times.
This is a Godless Sport

I think Saturday's 9th at BEL was the first time I've been DQ'd into a win this year. First time in a while in fact. 12 with 1 was my big exacta play.
The difficult thing about that DQ was perhaps the 1 would have held on for second, but clearly the 2 was better than the 12. There was no way to revise the finish differently, but still it was a screw for the people who boxed the 1-2.

Great point. I'm down a gazillion on DQ's I'd have to live pretty long to get back all the money stolen from me.

A double-disqualification costed me the entire Saturday superfecta pool some 20 years ago. Both the longshots in the win and place slots were taken down...and I would have still cashed if either one of them stayed up. Soon after that, I adopted a disciplined diet and exercise program...because I wanted to make sure that I was around long enough for this stroke of bad luck to "even out". It's been about 20 years now...and I am still waiting. But I am still following the diet and the exercise program...just in case...

The most interesting part of the story was that he didn't watch a race because it was after 9PM. Say what?

So, what you're saying is if there's no DQ, you're nothing but a fat lazy slob who would've already been dead by now. Just another testimony to the fact that horse racing extends and saves lives...

Horse racing is a "Godless sport"...as the poster "Whisperlunch" already stated. But we can use the difficulty inherent in the game to serve our own purposes.
A horseplayer friend of mine had gained about 50 pounds, and he was worried about his health. Seeing that I always kept myself in decent shape...he asked me to suggest a diet to him which would suit his particular needs. I thought about it...and then I told him to abstain from eating lunch until he cashed a winning ticket for the day. It's been about 8 months now...and he has already lost 57 pounds.
