...only by ~4000. It actually seemed more crowded than last year, but maybe that's just perception from the picnic/paddock area as opposed to grandstand.

Since you said "this year" I assume you mean for the meet, so it is too early to make predictions.
Many people take their vacations in August, and meet has only really just started when you posted....doubt attendance / wagering will be down when all is said and done.
