Just as Alexis de Tocqueville said in
Democracy in America back in (I think) 1851.
Essentially, he said that when politicians discover that they can ensure their tenure by bribing voters, the end will be near. (Ironically, it is the voters themselves who will pay for the bribes.)
What saved us for so long was that we had enough people in office who were either dedicated to the true cause (America) or their own greed.
"Greed" demands domestic stability.
In this new age, we have too many people in power dedicated to a disruption of current stability under the guise of reinvention into a kinder, gentler world.
Of course, this is all pure manure.
The challenge is how do we get that manure back into the horse.
