Not necessarily retired but definitely out of the Preakness and is at clinic being evaluated per DRF.

I guess the temperature that knocked him out of the Derby was in his leg(s).

They probably knew he had physical problems all along. That's why they didn't run in any of the preps. They knew he probably wouldn't stand up to any hard racing and still make a major race that way. So they took a shot trying to keep him fit just training to get one big race in, but he couldn't even handle that.
