It was retro weekend at both Santa Anita and Oaklawn. Oaklawn's regular bugler suffered an injury and was replaced Friday and Saturday by a 90-year old ex-Marine who works the north parking lot!!

And was in a lot of shows in the 80's as a track announcer, recurring the role in many episodes of Falcon Crest.

Heard him for a few races this weekend. Right now, from what I heard, he's top 10 in the country. Excellent.

Pretty amazing that someone who called races in 1975 is still working in 2022.

I love Alan's calls. He's from an era where announcers were much less flamboyant. Just a nuts-and-bolts call.

Did you guys know that back in the day race callers were told by management not to call really close photo finishes and some were instructed to end the call at the sixteenth pole?

I never understood that rationale, Vic. I know it happened back in the day, though. Would not have flown in the UK or Australia that is for sure where the audio of race calls from the track was transmitted on radio and into betting shops.

I enjoyed Mr. Buchdahl's calls this past weekend. It was like discovering the missing link between the name, position and margin style of call and the more modern narrative approach. Old school cool!

Are you visiting the California Fair Circuit this summer? If so, I shall be at Pleasanton, Sacramento, Ferndale and Fresno.

It is funny as a kid/teenager I loved Harry Henson for thoros and Robin Burns for harness as track announcers (it is funny I hated Trevor the first couple of years but as he grew on me he actually became my favorite). When I would hear Alan Bucdahl call a race it absolutely pained me. It was almost like he was calling a race in slow motion (my memories of him are "and Mushed Grapefruit is (pause) ahead (pause) by (pause) 4 lengths".. I actually went on to youtube and listened to couple of races he called and he was ok. Either he has sped up his tempo or my brain has slowed down, one or the other.
