Patriots vs. Broncos

Football aficionados, sports bettors, and countrymen, lend me your ears, I come to critique the Patriots-Chiefs game, not to praise it.

First, let me state my firm belief that the Patriots vs. Chiefs matchup was a game that the New England Patriots could have won. Bill Belichick and the Patriots’ coaching staff put together an excellent game-plan that throttled both the Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense. The Patriots were basically rushing three and covering everyone in sight. They were daring Patrick Mahomes to run. By the way, Mahomes and the Chiefs didn’t score a touchdown until the end of the 3rd quarter (When was the last time you witnessed that?). Yet, it was all for not. To put it simply: The Patriots shot themselves in the foot.

I’ve seen many a football game… That goes for Pop Warner, middle-school and high school, not to mention college and professional games. Yet, in all those years, I have rarely seen such poor quarterback play-management. I kept screaming at my television, “Don’t get sacked! Don’t get sacked! Throw it away!” But no. Brian Hoyer, a 12-year NFL veteran – who should know better – gets sacked (Hoyer has now lost 11-straight starts for three different teams). Who did he think he was? Fran Tarkenton. No last-second, first-half field goal. No 6-6 tie going into the locker rooms. Nothing. Nada. Nihil.

In fact, the Patriots dominated from the middle of the 2nd quarter until late in the 3rd quarter, yet with nothing to show for it. Frustrating is an understatement. If Hoyer didn’t make those blunders and an interception, his quarterbacking might have been considered decent, but…

At this point, let me get into my observations and analyses. Without Cam Newton, the New England Patriots are in trouble. You’re left with the veteran Hoyer and the relative newcomer, Jarrett Stidham. Neither comes close to filling Newton’s shoes. I doubt Hoyer can throw effectively beyond 20 yards and as for “Happy Feet” Stidham, I wasn’t impressed (yes, he threw for the Patriots only touchdown to N’Keal Harry). Yet I personally see Stidham as a “work-in-progress,” one that may or may not work out. The two Patriots quarterbacks combined for three interceptions. In fact, if Newton can’t go, I’d lean toward Hoyer.

The receiving corps is basically Bird, James White, and “I’m not yet wild about Harry.” In my opinion, I believe Julian Edelman, a once great receiver, is becoming shell-shocked. He’s taken a lot of punishment over the years; he’s beginning to show its effects. Edelman is “hearing footsteps.” How much more punishment can his body take? And he knows it. (Will have be on the trading block?). As for the tight end position, as Tony Soprano would say, “Fuhgettaboutit!” There is nothing over the middle; I mean nothing!

As far as the Patriots’ run-offense, Damien Harris ran for 100 yards and Rex Burkhead chipped in with 45 (a far cry from his game against the Raiders). Sony Michel was injured; he may be another player on the way out; if they can get somebody for him. Bird and James White did the bulk of the pass-catching. Jake Bailey punted extremely well. I believe he was one of the few bright lights along with a strong Patriots defense.

What was so frustrating is that the Patriots held the Chiefs to under 100-yards rushing, and Patrick Mahomes had, at least for him, a subpar game in which he completed just 19 passes and two TD’s on 29 throws. Let’s face it, the Patriots let the Chiefs get off the hook,

In summation the Patriots had more total yardage, more first downs and longer time of possession (about three minutes) than the Chiefs. Yet New England came out on the short end of a 26-10 score.

Next up for the Patriots, the Denver Broncos at home. The game is now scheduled for 4:25 p.m., Sunday. I don’t know about Cam Newton’s status, but I just learned that Stephon Gilmore has contracted Covid-19. His absence would leave a huge hole in the Patriots secondary.

As for The Broncos, they garnered their first win last Thursday by defeating the hapless New York Jets, 37-28. The Patriots opened up at minus - 11. One of the boards I saw now has the Patriots at minus – 5 ˝ (maybe that could be because of Gilmore’s status, or is it Newton, or both). Will there be more “shoes to drop?” Some sportsbooks don’t even have the game listed.

By the way, the last I saw, over/under was 47.5. If I knew that Cam Newton wasn’t playing I would take the points and bet on the Broncos. There are a lot of imponderables. Even if Newton plays, will he be able to go full tilt? I think it’s going to be a close game. I have yet to make my pick. I’m awaiting further developments.

I just heard that the remnants of Hurricane Delta that is currently hitting Louisiana will be in Foxboro by Monday's game-time, 5 p.m. EDT for the Patriots vs. Broncos game. The last I saw the over/under was 40.5. I'm betting the "under." (I wouldn't wait too long as the over/under may move down). I think there will be fumbles galore. I believe it will be difficult to pass. On the line itself, the Broncos are - 3.5 underdogs. I'm thinking of betting the Patriots. Yet I believe the value-play is "the under." Good luck!
