This is a battle that neither of us can win, but your argument makes it sound like anyone who is a singer/songwriter is better than Elton John. That's preposterous. For me, a song is the melding of lyrics and music. Many of the best songs had different people writing the lyrics and the music. I fail to see how Joel's lyrics are that good. Big Shot? Just the Way You are? We Didn't Start the Fire??? People may love those songs but they are mediocre lyrically.

At the end of the day, he played and sung the songs, and was an incredible performer. There are very few entertainers as good as Elton John.
I agree. Great performer, wish I had seen him live. I have 6 or 7 of his albums on vinyl.

I wish I did as well. Never close to me, much less if I wanted to afford the cost.

Wow. Elton vinyl may pay a bit in a decade or two. Hell, probably pays well now. You have Yellow Brick on vinyl I'd store that in 1,000 feet of bubble wrap.

You make a huge error here. Sir Elton wrote 99% of the music for all the hits. He’s a genius when it comes to putting music to words. He developed the skill from a simple piano exercise he learned as a kid.

The best example of this is a blues guitar exercise that is the same exercise you hear George Benson do on “Broadway”

Elton takes it further. Not just using single notes, but whole words.

He’s a genius, and so is Taupin

I don't think it is anything to get in a fight over.

Elton and Bernie worked together.

They ended up making great music. We are all the better for their greatness.

You've made a rather ambitious statement here!

And you're comparing Billy Joel's, 150 million records sold to Elton's 300 million sold?

Quote:
It is an enviable problem to have. Billy Joel has sold more than 150 million albums, his Greatest Hits double album alone has shifted 23 million copies, and he is the third biggest-selling solo artist of all time in the United States, bigger than Springsteen, Madonna and Michael Jackson.--Oct 24, 2013
He may have surpassed Madonna and Michael by now, but who knows.

Quote:
Elton has achieved 26 gold, 38 platinum or multi-platinum and 1 diamond albums, has sold more than 300 million records worldwide, and holds the record for the biggest selling single of all time, Candle In The Wind 1997.
The last one was the little number he performed at Princess Diana's funeral service.

You're an engineer, right? You should be able to do better than this. I have to bust on ya, I can't help it.

ELTON by a gazillion!!!
