Good umps, bad umps and Angel

Angel Hernandez must have set a record when he had an astounding three calls overturned in last night's Yankees/Red Sox game. As a former umpire, I was long opposed to having replay in baseball. Eventually, I came around and now believe that having replay is a good thing. The argument was always that umpires get a high percentage of calls correct (99%). While this is true, most calls in baseball are easy to make and with four man crews, even many of the "difficult" calls are easy (ex: hard shots right down the line). I have often wondered what the accuracy rate is on close calls, or more importantly, on close calls that get reviewed. My anecdotal evidence is that about half the calls get overturned. Anything over 20-25% would be hard to imagine.

Angel Hernandez is in a class by himself as far as being a bad umpire, and not just because of this one game. His response to not getting selected as a crew chief or World Series umpire was to sue MLB for discrimination. As this article explains, his performance in last night's game (and always really) does not go far in supporting his claim.

King,

Also as a former umpire, I've got to say that the strike zones in a great many games I've seen this year have been so inconsistent.

I hate to say it but it could be time for the balls and strikes AI.

The HBO Real Sports piece on this is great. They highly advocate for automated ball and strike calls. It is seamless and you don't even notice as a fan.

On pitches considered close, home plate umpires were only around 50% accurate if memory serves.

Edit: I found it, they miss about 1/3 of close pitches.

This is like Heaven. Kill them dead at home and now they are forced into umpire crying. I almost feel bad for them, Hernandez going to home plate was pre-game TV, so he was a lamb waiting to be slaughtered. He should have called in sick.
