I will add another wrinkle to direct observation. Some events are verifiable, in various degrees of directness, but many also depend on what instruments you use aiding you to see, your point of view, and which way you are looking.
If you are in Plato's cave, and are looking at only at the shadows cast, should you believe shadows are reality, or only a limited aspect of reality?
