Would seem to me that the concentration of horses with too few or aging trainers is a big problem in California

Wonder if anyone has investigated actually recruiting trainers globally to California racing much as they do in HK - not just incentives to run horses at Del Mar - this needs a bigger effort

Then jocks like Jess would get a fairer shot and the wagering quality would improve

While I'm at it, more turf racing not less, especially down the hill would help also

Jess's situation is a symptom of this larger problem
There's an old saying among Black lawyers that they have to work twice as hard because a lot of potential clients have racist stereotypical assumptions and they have to overcome that.

I suspect the same is true with female jockeys. Even just subconsciously, a lot of trainers and owners probably assume they aren't as strong and skilled as male jocks. So they have to overcome those stereotypes. The absolute top ones have done that- hundreds of jockeys, male and female, would kill for the kind of career Julie Krone had- but it's always been hard for female jocks to make that sale.

Not Always True

see Rachael Blackmore, likely to be more the case going forward as women are empowered to do more in general

maybe Ireland does just rock more generally, definitely rising up among the regions breeding the best horses these days also

and don't get me started on TLG, now he's picking fights with Greg Wolf for no reason, the world's nicest person

I watched the show all day today and have no idea what you are talking about. This focus on Andy can't be good for you.

Greg and Andy were going back and forth a bit yesterday regarding the pronunciation of Forte.

Tough day for you with me picking a $20 winner and an $18 winner. All that hate must be good for you.

Keep hating.

Ireland is "rising up" in the breeding industry? Coolmore is the largest breeding operation in the world; the Aga Khan has been there for decades and has Sea the Stars (sire of Baaeed) standing there; Moyglare Stud has been churning out Group 1 horses since the 1960s; Godolphin & Juddmonte have major operations there.

Something like 17 of the last 25 Epsom Derby winners were bred in Ireland.

The greatest stallion since Sadler's Wells (who stood in Ireland), Galileo was bred in Ireland and stood at stud there.

The Byerley Turk saw military service in Ireland.
