Best Band Since 1980
Trying to eliminate the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin and other giants from the 60's and 70's.
Also want to eliminate solo acts like Michael Jackson, Madonna and all that.
I say it comes down to two:
Red Hot Chili Peppers or U2
I am a Chili Peppers fan thru and thru, and my vote goes for them over anyone.
I am certainly leaving out some deserving groups.
Help me out (and tell me why they're better than the Chili Peppers!)

Easy:
Yellowjackets
They are all monster players. No collection of musicians, of any genre can match their skills. I may not like most of their music but if the question is who is the best...case closed.

Big Eagles fan here, before AND after 80's; sorry to go with the obvious commercial success.

Why do I like Govt. Mule better? I just think Warren is the best guitar player to come through after the 80's...if you like rock, southern rock and blues...Warren is the man! I've seen and heard them play them all too.....they do Zeppelin, the Stones, Black Sabbath, Cream, the Beatles and just about all the bands that are "classic rock". Sometimes they will do a whole "cover set" of these bands....in their own way. Those guys just play the way I grew up to love music plus I go to Mt. Jam every June. Its four days of the best music you will ever hear by a wide variety of bands, hosted by Govt. Mule.

Btw, I think PhantomOnTour has the top two pegged.
The one band I really like who have made it big in recent years are
Kings of Leon. Honorable mention for the Avett Brothers,
but U2 and the Chilis have been killing it for a long time now.

Springsteen and E Street band
Bon Jovi
U2
Van Halen
Miley Cyrus
Vocalist I'd have to give it to Whitney Houston. What a waste of talent.

I am not sure if they qualify as a band, but I like the country group Lady Antebellum a lot. The British Folk Rock band, Mumford and Sons, is probably the real best band out there. Bands have kind of gone out of style in popular music today in favor of the solo artist. But then it can be argued that music has kind gone out of style in popular music today as well.

I think REM is the clear winner, they started early 80s and have been (mostly) vital since then, I think they have retired now not sure.
Pearl Jam an U2 would be in contention.

Yellowjackets are a great fusion band but they started in 1977.

Oh and to give a reason why REM is better than the Chili Peppers...well that is obvious isn't it? I do like RHCP but I do not think they are on REMs level, RHCP just mined that funk groove thing for all it was worth, REM is more versatile, better songs...

The Pretenders may be somewhat underated. The first 3 albums are all good...the first (Dec-79, so close enough) being by far the best imo.
Others for me would be
Pearl Jam
Metallica
REM

REM or U2 would be my answer.
think about it in terms of 25 year, quarter century increments.
best bands from 1989 to present ?
best bands from 1964 to 1989 ?
then compare the two lists.
