It was intended to be a thorough guide, and also one for Win10 Pro users who can't just click pause. The registry hack to keep a version until its EOL is quite useful.

........................

I have a 6 year old desktop running Windows 8.1
trying to keep it as long as possible - I'm not real geekay - I do mostly basic stuff

I don't want to buy a new one
it's not the money - I just hate the process of choosing and getting adjusted to a new one

anyway, it won't download updates anymore
it sends me a message to do it manually but that doesn't work either
it fails every time

I talked to a techie and asked him if my computer is going to crash
he said that as long as I had a good anti-virus - which I do - I should be okay

we'll see
if it crashes I'll get a new one

there are no sensitive files on it - they all go to various cloud services

Windows 8.1 has its EOL scheduled for 1/10/23 so you should still be able to get updates. Your tech person should be able to diagnose the problem. The fix is probably something simple, but the list of what the issue might be is probably long. I have a similar problem with my Win7 Home laptop. I cannot get the very last update to install. However, everything is fine on my Win7 desktop. Well, it was before some component on it died.

Sometimes I think these problems are caused by M$ trying to force everyone to 10. Win10 updates are no bargain either, but I digress.
