Warning to anyone running Win 10 v. 20H2

https://www.askwoody.com/2020/gunter...e-with-chkdsk/

Quote:
In Windows 10 20H2 with installed cumulative update KB4592438, chkdsk causes massive issues. It destroys the file system during a disk check on SSDs, so Windows 10 can’t start after a reboot.
Holy shit...

This is Microsoft's way of telling you that Windows 11 is about to be launched.

So, isn't everyone using W10 going to get updated automatically?

Running 7 and 8.1 and I got a similar message when booting up couple days ago. Check disk running check several times booting. Have it set NOT to update automatically but who knows what they do now. Give you no choice. Let check disk run through on SSD and other drives and so far hasn't happened again.

Yes and no. You can pause updates on Win10 Home (highly recommended) until AskWoody's Defcon level is 3 or higher. You can pause on the Pro version but I think it's a more involved process than on Home. I could be wrong about that. Unfortunately, my Win7 box died and I build a new one and had to get...gulp...Win10. But M$ has been know to force updates no matter what the settings are so it's a hit-or-miss proposition.

My Win 7 computer also died(may it rest in pieces) and I had an Intel processor I had bought and never used. Found out it was not compatible with any old OS before Win 10 and was pissed to say the least. Figured out how to make it work and so far not too many problems. Most of my software won't work with 8 and above so I had to have a working Win 7 machine. Saves me the trouble of having to rewrite everything right away. Linux is getting more tempting but too lazy to just sit down and change everything in the near term.

Microsoft has said to have fixed this little problem...and here's an accompanying article which might be of benefit:

Unfortunately the system ran the disk check on boot for some reason which is disconcerting thinking all of a sudden something was wrong....Just let it run through a couple times and no errors came up. Have one NVME and one SSD both pretty new. Just Windows being Windows.
Always have a backup is my philosophy to everyone I dealt with.

Such a long guide? Wow. Totally unnecessary IMO.

Just press Win+I go to windows update and click the "PAUSE UPDATES FOR 7 DAYS" button (if you are Windows 10 home edition). Keep pressing that until it doesn't let you anymore...should be good for about a month.

Then check in here every so often to see if the coast is clear to update:
