The Reston Virginia example of what the potential of a mutating virus can do should be warning to all.

The biggest danger is when the infective agent can be spread on droplets from coughing or sneezing and then it goes through large populations like a wildfire.

Once a virus has adequate host numbers infected, it usually begins to mutate and often becomes MORE virulent.

Take, for example, a virus that has a mutation that makes it particularly deadly to its human host and kills the host within a few hours of infection. The virus needs a new, healthy host for its descendants to survive. If it kills its host before the host infects others, that mutation will disappear.

When going through wider and wider number of hosts, it can mutate wildly. Problem with THIS, and MOST virus infections, is that the host is an infective vehicle long before symptoms arise so by the time they are sick, they have already spread the bug widely.

MOST viruses are SPECIES SPECIFIC for it requires similar antigenic cellular surface markers that match the virus in order for it to permeate the cell membrane and then hijack the host reproductive apparatus because viruses cannot replicate by themselves.

Quote: Viruses can infect only certain species of hosts and only certain cells within that host. ... For most viruses, the molecular basis for this specificity is that a particular surface molecule known as the viral receptor must be found on the host cell surface for the virus to attach.

One of my dogs picked up canine coronavirus at a dog show years ago and brought it back to my other dogs. It was not pretty.

I know nothing about the subject, but I could swear I read it's the other way around on some experts web page years ago. If a virus strain is virulent it tends to kill its hosts so quickly, the probability of it spreading starts diminishing. So it's the weaker strains that tend to survive and spread until high risk strains finally burn themselves out.

Add a hundred or two more countries to that list, and you'll be happy.

Or...........maybe not.

The first doctors reporting it thought it was SARS and have been detained for spreading false information.

I'm not going to tell you about the things I encountered in dog rescue, right here in the good ol' usa.

The very least type of offense, but quite plentiful, would be the dog(s) who have lived it's entire life, in the backyard, on the end of a rather short chain, and knows only the few feet around himself and his un-insulated dog house, and a hand that thrusts a bowl of food toward him 1x a day. Aloneness.

I cant' even count THOSE there are so many.

You surely don't want to know about other ones.....you would need brain bleach to erase it from your memory.

Wasn't Mike Vick recently given some kind of pro bowl captain -----there is no way to "un-do" the untold suffering those dogs experienced. Ever.

When I see people who have never seen the things that are done to dogs, cats, by supposedly civilized humans, because they aren't knee deep in it every day, I am both happy for them, but also realize that they are terribly terribly naive.

If what other humans are doing to dogs and cats is concerning, look around you to help the ones nearby that need your help. Otherwise, glass houses......
