Why I Like "The Over".

We had end zone seats. Right behind and above the goal post. Mezzanine. My wife and I. New Orleans SuperDome. Sunday, January 25, 1981. The Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles. Super Bowl XV.

I was then in my late-30s. I had taken a leave-of-absence from teaching in 1980-81 to work as CBS in Boston’s Manager of Network Sports Operations.

One of the perks of the job (there were a total of about 25 others both from the station and from our major sponsors, e. g., Gulf, Chevrolet, Nixdorf, etc. on that Northeast Airline flight out of Boston’s Logan Airport bound for New Orleans for the Super Bowl.

Oh, my wife and I had a great time. We loved both the food and the ambiance of “The Big Easy.” I did get blottoed at a place in “The French Quarter”; it's called Pat O’Brien’s”. I remember “O’Brien’s” had a courtyard.

I recall both Philly and Oakland fans getting into some good-natured ribbing.

As I remember, I asked our waiter what he recommended for a beverage. He said the place’s "signature" drink was called a “Hurricane”. I recall saying, “O.K., I’ll try it.” A minute or two later, he brings me one, a “Hurricane,” that is.

If I recall, the drink had a reddish tinge. The liquid had been poured over ice in an “hour-shaped” (wider at the bottom) glass. It was garnished with a lemon and a cherry.

I remember taking a couple sips. A few seconds later I thought I had just been whacked over the head with a sledgehammer. The “Hurricane” packed a punch. I mean like, “Whoa, where am I?”

As for the Super Bowl itself, it was entertaining. The Raiders won 27-10.

Yet, one of the things I remember was how stifling it was inside the Superdome. Wall-to-wall. Packed. I could see where an enclosed stadium like that could take its toll on the players, especially the linemen, particularly as the game moved into the 2nd half. By the fourth quarter…

That’s why I am, among other reasons, looking for a high-scoring game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a flurry of late-game touchdowns. As for the outcome, I’m less sure, but I personally believe the two teams will combine to top “the over”.
