It's amazing that one track would issue a press release without coming to an agreement with the other two tracks. Apparently the way people run businesses is changing.

It shouldn't be taken for granted that spacing the race 4 weeks from the Derby will make things "safer".

For one, would this year's race have been "safer" if a horse like Forte (or any of the other Derby scratches) was able to get shoe horned off the Veterinarian's List in time to start?

But more importantly, do they really think horsemen are going to use the extended spacing to afford their horses "more time to recover"? Probably not. It just means the horses will have at least 2 more workouts ahead of the race instead of one or none. Races aren't the only times horses undergo physical stress on their bodies. In fact, most of the damage or wear & tear comes from overtraining.

Of course, the reality is this move has little to do with safety & everything to do with trying to avoid the dreadful renditions of the Preakness we've seen over the past couple of decades, this year's being amongst the worst.

As a resounding F U in response to this silly way of going about it, NYRA should keep the Belmont on the normal day & simply change the race to 10 or maybe even 9 furlongs.

If horsemen need at least 4 weeks between starts, 5's got to be even better, right?

A little gamesmanship on Aidan Butler's part taking the high road with a nod to NYRA. The first Saturday in May June and July idea has been out there for a long time.

None of them want their race on a holiday weekend. The only way to do that is for all of them to adjust their dates. Nope lets get into a pissing match instead.

I hope NYRA stands firm and keeps the Belmont date. They could offer a $10M bonus for anyone winning the Derby, Belmont and Travers.

NYRA is going to have to adjust the Belmont and part of its stakes schedule, it's in a bad spot politically given everything that's gone on regarding horse safety to take a position against spacing out the triple crown when the argument for doing it is going to (publicly at least) be for animal welfare.

The only shocking outcome would be racing not screwing up one of the few things that has been wildly successful.

Pimlico seems to think they are somehow in a leadership role. If they move the Preakness to 4 weeks out, then if NYRA moves the Belmont to 4 weeks out, the Preakness takes on the same significance as a cheap claimer on Wednesday afternoon. Hopefully, there will be reason and talks and racing will be better for it.

The Belmont is pointless without the Preakness running before it, which makes the entirety of Belmont’s stakes card that day pointless too.
