New Sires of 2012
The arrival of my yearly stallion register and a recent profile of new sires in the Bloodhorse has got me thinking. So here's my question, if you were able to breed to one of the new incoming sires this spring, and not taking into account the special needs of any particular mare, who would it be and why?
For me, it would be Court Vision. He hits every mark I have except that he doesn't yet "look" like a sire (he'll need a few years away from the track for that). He's run well on dirt and turf. He's won at 10f. He won at 2, and he's got a female family to die for. He's even reasonably priced at $10,000.
The last horse I'd be willing to breed to would be Uncle Mo. I just don't see, after the year he's had, how he can command that price. Yeah, I'm gonna pay $35,000 for the guy with the mysterious debilitating liver problems. I think not.

Me I'd roll the dice with Gio Ponti or Albertus Maximus. Why? Why not...

Not likely Mo will pass this on . Seattle Slew was very ill with a blood disorder
and later suffered with serious spine ailment. Not comparing the two on the track just saying they both had serious ailments .Mo's came before he got
into his a crucial part of his three year old season , very unfortunate.
Indian Charlie's death will likely bring more business to Mo .

If I had thousands to play with , I'd go with Street Sense at $40,000 .

Drosselmeyer
I've stated my opinion on his possibilities as a sire before.I think he offers a wide range of options but most of all classic distances. If things don't work out he has some turf in the family and one turn capabilities.Maybe its just a gut feeling but I see him turning into an exceptional sire.

Does anybody actually pay the advertised price?

Very good question. Many do but some are able to negotiate with the stallions owner(s). I had bred to officer 5 years ago at the time the going rate was about $35k after we had 2 mares in foal by him I got an email from the owners saying the new stallion fee would be about half. I was able to negotiate for a lower rate. Officer now stands in Korea he was sold by Taylormade in September 2010.

Some stallions' owners, mostly the "non-first rate" ones, will discount or even make free a breeding if your mare has substantial black type. This does two things: if sold at auction, if improves the stud's average yearling auction prices, etc. and if a star on the racetrack improves the stud's progeny.
And I'm sure if you're breeding 10 mares to the same stallion, you're bound to get some kind of discount. I guess it would depend from farm to farm.

One of the most interesting gambling games in history, it's amazing the amount of money spent and won /or lost before a stallion is proven.
I personally like a good female family line in a stallion, to me this separates the decent from the best. I think stallions like Kitten's Joy with a great female side are usually over looked until they start to throw stakes winners. A similar thing happened with Wild Rush, he was sold to Japan, but he had one of the best female sides. I saw him sell at Keeneland in a 2 yr old in training sale, I haven't seen anything like him in years of going to sales. Rose Park his mare threw nothing but nice babies, and I guess he does too.

Twirling Candy at $15k, speed and Lane's End generally supports it's young stallions with their nice mares.
Girolamo $15k. Slightly overpriced but he had ability and that's ALOT of pedigree.
Gayego $6500 This is one exceptional looking horse
Big Drama $10k I'd be sure to make the foals FLA Stallion Series eligible. The Calder 2yo program is great and if they can run at all he should have numbers on his side
Has Albertus Maximus been on mothballs for 3 years?

I have a young Orientate (Mt. Livermore) filly out of a Storm Bird mare, this will be her 1st foal. I am looking for interesting suggestions, but I don't want to spend too much. She is a 2yr old winner and stakes placed at 2, but only had a 6 starts.
