Handicapping synthetic races is almost as difficult as deciphering a sentence with FOUR commas in it.

I wonder if "the mad genius" still holds the patent on Tapeta?

I believe it will bring in a lot more horses to ship in from across the country (US) and maybe here in Canada too to go to Gulfstream Park for Tapeta racing

Should be exciting to watch

I think lots of trainers like synthetics more than their horses do.

Yea I was going to say that

Some are "specialists" and some are hoping to try something new for themselves but also the horse too

I agree with you in regards to the championship meet but the rest of the year at GP is not appealing at all. . It's mostly chalk winning and there is no value. At least with the addition of Tapeta you could get some prices depending on field size. If you get fields like they do at Arlington then it was a waste of time and money.

It fools owners into thinking their horses are more competitive than they really are because of the bunched finishes.

Has Gulfstream gone into how they plan to use their Tapeta course?

Just cheaper races to save the turf course and/or 'off-turf' for non-feature races when it rains?

Or are they planning to card relatively high-purse races on it?

Since Gpw is no more I'm guessing they plan on running about two months of tapeta with no turf.

I haven't looked at a synthetic race in years and don't plan to start.

I'm sure there are people out there that have studied surface switches carefully enough to have some insights with actual value, but for me it's a complexity that's more likely to keep me out of race than to entice me into a bet.

I'll post the article if I can find it but I read last night it's the former...aka cheaper races and to (hopefully) reduce the number of scratches when races go off-turf.

The COO indicated the interest from the connections would dictate the volume of races carded specifically for the tapeta.

On the Gulfstream Overnite for Sunday I noticed this note.

Attention Horsemen: Tapeta Surface preparation will begin Monday, June 7, two weeks earlier than originally proposed. Five furlong turf races will not be carded for 2-3 weeks. Racing department will try to offer those races prior to start up. Two turn turf races will not be affected.

Good news though, they will keep the Gulfstream turf course timing system.
