Sorry to hear about Neumie's passing. Watched him and Lobel on the local sports for years, I remember at the old Foxboro stadium we used to gather near the tunnel to razz those bad Patriot teams of years gone by when the players entered the tunnel; the local media would gather until they let them in and we used to banter with Neumie and Bob Lobel.
Did not follow horse racing until about 20 years ago, prior to that would always complain about Neumie having Breeders Cup highlights on Channel 4 instead of college football clips.
But when I started following horse racing it was great to have a local well-respected sports guy who loved horse racing. Gambling on anything in the Irish Catholic milieu I grew up in was considered disgraceful, and even today we don't talk about horse racing with family or non-horse-racing fans. Neumie gave the sport legitimacy here.
He was at Suffolk during a rainy 75th anniversary and was very cordial to my wife who was taking pictures that day. Saw him at Suffolk handicapping contests. Supported the local track. Always had a smile on his face and willing to talk to anyone.
Saw him on the apron at Saratoga a few years ago, but will remember seeing him sitting by himself in the paddock at Gulfstream, big smile, enjoying himself playing the horses on a beautiful day. That's how I will remember him.

Great stuff, Brass Hat.
I go to many Breeders Cups and also see broadcasters frequently in the sun, enjoying the weather, their job, and the crowd. It really is the perfect event that although pretty busy, reminds one of the old days (and I'm not that old) - it isn't high security or high maintenance and everyone there knows why they are there.

Afleet Alex Interview
My memory of him was after Afleet Alex had run third in the Derby. BN asked Alex's jockey; "What Happened" in a negative manner.
"My horse just ran third in the Kentucky Derby" was the reply.
That shows exactly how much he knew about horse racing....

So you waited 16 years and the poor guy dying until you could rip him for not phrasing a basic question perfectly...in 2005.
Hopefully someone will come on here in 2037 and remind everyone about the idiotic post you made and write, "Glad you're gone Plain Steve!"

I remember that Derby...and I had a win-bet on Afleet Alex. And upon witnessing the shocking outcome of the race, "what happened?" was the first thing on my mind too. Should I be "gone", as well? 
When the exacta pays almost $10,000..."what happened?" is a very legitimate question, IMO.
