Tote Smoothing

I have been looking for the discussions on here for methods of tote smoothing but cannot find any. Would anyone be able to point me to them or help me with how to do this? I have been playing with the method proposed by Benter but must be doing something wrong as what I am getting is one or two horses being around odds of 2.00 and the rest up around 10. Not sure where I am going wrong.
