Are EVs throw away? what is their life expectancy?

I heard that the cost of changing batteries really cut on resale value of electric cars. Does that also mean 3rd and 4th battery changes will be very rare?

Just curious as I have driven 20 year old gasoline vehicles and wonder how many 20 year old electric vehicles will still be operating.

With the estimated cost of battery replacement from $5-$20k, I am sure most will get tossed, no idea what the salvage value would be. If the vehicle is one of the $20k battery replacement ones, it will get tossed with the rest of the vehicle in decent shape, what value it has will depend on the battery disposal fee, which Goggling says will cost $1-$3k. If you run your EV into the ground where it is only worth $60 a ton which is the current local scrap car price you will have to pay to get rid of it. I can see a future business of EV only salvage yards. I am sure a lot of the battery replacement price is labor as changing a battery looks like taking the car body off the frame.

That’s why hybrid is the way to go. Toyota warrants their hybrid batteries for 10 yrs and 150k miles.

There are companies popping up that “rehab” batteries for in the 1k range. But not sure how they are doing it. A hybrid battery in a Toyota is about 4-5k to change out if you’re out of warranty

I just did some Goggling, it looks like labor to change out a battery varies greatly, the Chevy Bolt it drops out the bottom pretty quickly, on a Ford Focus you have to disassemble a lot of the car's interior.

My ex owns a Tesla. Bought it new in 2018. Model S.

She’s now getting about 80%. Tesla will charge her 15k replacement. She can get a replacement elsewhere for about 10k but it would void her warranty. It would also void her free charging for life.

The car is perfect. She’s spent about 6k in upgrades. She wants to keep the car.

I agree.

You're not missing a thing. The Tesla owner, however, seems to have zero appreciation for the importance of value, most especially with big ticket items.

Maybe they knew going in that purchase price was subsidized and upkeep costs would be high forever. Similar to buying a printer and replacement ink cartridges cost more than half of new unit.

You know upfront the cost of keeping a car in good running order for ten years, some people know the cost of going beyond ten years when model selection really comes into play. Who wants to go with something that has the potential of costing much more just at the ten year mark?

Reading comprehension.

The 6k was for upgrades. (Options)

The batteries aren’t dead. They are now charging at 80%.

There are no dings or scratches. Interior is perfect. The car would show at close to 100 points.

For 15 grand she would have a new car.
