Dave, that scene was based on a real-life event in the life of writer Everett Greenbaum while he was in the Navy. That court scene really happened, exactly how they played it on MASH, right down to the officer asking a black sailor to "give us a number."

Starts around the 19-minute mark where he discusses it.

Hilarious.

This thread makes me want to go back and watch those M*A*S*H shows all over again.

I once had a MASH trivia game. It was very cool, but nobody could play with us because only Beth & I knew the answers.

Here's another tidbit I just found out today. Apparently in the Season 4 opener, when Mike Farrell is introduced, Wayne Rogers does appear in the episode. When Hawkeye and Radar pull into Kimbo, the PA says "Sergeant Sterner, report to maintenance. Sergeant Sterner to maintenance."

That was Wayne Rogers! I must have watched that episode 10 times and never even noticed that was his voice.

It's also odd because Rogers left under bad circumstances, with each side filing lawsuits against the other. I wonder if Larry Gelbart or someone snuck the voice onto the final cut knowing that CBS would never catch it in checking the episode.

Consider that, other than Alan Alda and Morgan, who both had a great careers, the rest of them had little or nothing. A few Lifetime TV movies for BJ, Klinger, Radar, Hot Lips, Blake and the rest were pretty much forgotten after the series ended.

LOL - Just thought of "The Wind." I know you remember Col. Flagg.

You know who's had a pretty good career after MASH? GW Bailey, who played Rizzo in the last 3 seasons. He always had steady work and now co-stars in "The Closer" on TNT. I would love to see David Ogden Stiers guest in that show and do scenes with Bailey. In the later years, those two were one of the few bright spots in a few episodes.

I'd say Mike Farrell has been pretty busy the last 25 years, he was in some TV movies and has done a lot of guest spots. Stiers never seemed to find the right vehicle for his talents. He was great in a couple Perry Mason movies. But Swit, Farr, Burghoff basically did very little. Stevenson and Linville each had several failed TV shows after MASH.

Wayne Rogers didn't appear to suffer as much as Mclean did for leaving the show, at least financially. The word on Rogers was he left the show for many reasons, including the studio had no phone where they filmed, and he was always rushing off to call people for his real estate deals. Linville said years later that Rogers made more money outside his acting than he did in it.

You are right! I forgot Lt. Provencza!

Good call. Of course, that is the job-du-jour, which ends in just a few weeks.

Think they starting a new series with the same people, minus Kyra. Show is called "Major Crimes Unit."

I think Mary McDonell will take the Kyra role, but not sure.

My brother caddied for Wayne Rogers once in a pro-am, said he was a great guy, very easy-going and fun to be around.

During the last years of MASH, Loretta Swit was in one of the most under-appreciated movies of all time, SOB. Usually when you have a ton of star power in a film, the story gets overshadowed, but this movie was cast perfectly and of course did get plenty of notoriety for Julie Andrews' topless scene.
Robert Preston, who playedDr. Irving Finegarten, was really the highlight of the movie for me though. It was also William Holden's final film.

MASH

Two best episodes I remeber are "Tuttle" and "Adams Ribs"
They made up Capt. Tuttle and at the end when he supposedly died,Henry says "best damn D.O. we ever had"

Adams Ribs was when Hawkeye sent to Chicago for a take out order of ribs When they finally get close to getting the ribs :
Hawkeye-We are approaching nirvana Radar
Radar-Is that anywhere near chicago?

CLASSIC!

Or when the staff sergeant won't find the package, so they threaten to close the supply area for medical reasons.

Sgt: "What's in the package?"
Hawkeye: "Ribs and sauce from Chicago."
Sgt: "Adams's Ribs?"
Hawkeye: "You know?"
Sgt: "I'm from Joliet, I'd walk in my knees in the snow for a takeout order."
Trapper: "He's one of you."
