A federal judge has granted the injunction/temporary restraining order to delay sports betting in New Jersey. No bets on Sunday at Monmouth.

They should do it anyway. Let the judge have a fit.
What's he going to do? Send out the national guard?
All kidding aside.
This is part of the legal system to which I object. When one person who may or may have a bias or an agenda can with a stroke of a pen halt commerce.
Especially in light of the fact that the sports leagues have not met their burden of proof. They claim "irreparable harm"..
I just am not seeing it. There is already sports wagering in other states.
So how could that go on and not cause irreparable harm.
Someone had better come up with some answers pretty quickly.

It is stupid.
This approach the sport leagues are taking does not appear to hold water.

I really don't why anybody "without a dog in the fight" would think it would happen any differently. It would have been a real shock if the restraining order had not been granted. Now the state of NJ gets to decide how much money they want to spend on lawyers in an attempt to win the case.

Based on what premise? There have been no other cases like this except Judge Shipps 2003 ruling, so based on the "temporary" restraining order he has essentially asked for more time so both sides can get together on some form of sports wagering that won't harm the professional sports leagues and NCAA or negate the right that the racetracks and casinos have to take wagering on sports. That is a tall task and until these groups can work something out he isn't going to make any permanent legal ruling, thus the temporary restraining order.

That's nonsense. There is huge numbers bet on college hoops. Not as much as football, but significant volume(handle) nonetheless.
Look, you're a naysayer. I get it.
You argument is not logical. If it were, there would be no interest in sports betting at ANY casino. Such is not the case.
If it bothers you so much then don't bet on sports. But please don't go thinking your opinion of the activity means more than those who wish to place wagers on sports.

I agree and i would bet that the state of NJ could actually show how this will HELP the sports leagues before the sports leagues could show how it will hurt them.
The idea that they think people are stupid and don't realize that the state of NJ has no affiliation to the sports leagues and anything that happens in the leagues has nothing to do with NJ taking bets.

What is your point?
That NJ should not have sports wagering because the NFL does not have a 52 game schedule? Jesus Christ...

The final hearing is scheduled for Oct 31, so by next weekend SW could be back on.
If Shipp rules against NJ, I would love to see Monmouth open anyway. REMEMBER: THIS IS ALL ABOUT THE ABJECT FEAR THE PRO LEAGUES< AND PARTICULARLY THE NFL, HAS AT THE PROSPECT OF INCREASED REGULATION OF THEIR 32 BUSINESSES. The NFL was born by marginal types who thrived on the edges of legality. hey've gained respectability, but it's still basically a criminal organization. The league and teams have so many bodies buried that they instinctively cover up and deny anytime they're faced with scandal.
Legalized wagering means closer scrutiny from gov't, and eventually the former Justice Dept. and other law enforcement officials who work for NFL Security won't be able to keep the lid on things. It terrifies them.
Call their bluff.

Interesting passage from the Monmouth Park web site:
Quote:
In noting today’s ruling, Drazin said, “In the event that the ultimate decision is that a temporary restraining order should not have been granted, the Judge required the leagues to post a $1.7 million bond for potential damages to the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. In addition, the injunction only applies to the four leagues and the NCAA and still allows for betting on other sports such as golf, tennis, boxing, MMA fighting, NASCAR and soccer.”
|
Does that mean that wagering on these sports will be permitted irrespective of the outcome of the Oct 31 hearing?

I hear the next plan to save Horseracing in NJ is to have Pizza banned everywhere in the state except Monmouth Park.
