This is part of the
TVG promotion where a $10 win bet can result in a refund if the horse finishes 2nd or 3rd.
Let's give it a shot.
Taman Guard (8-1) - Toss out the turf experiment. But even so, he tends to fade in the lane, and lost by over 19 lengths in his last one-mile race. Pass.
Soi Phet (3-1) - Old timer just won a 100k race. Unfortunately, this is a heavy fan favorite, which usually results in an underlaid price. His 8-4-2-0 Los Alamitos record is obviously respected though.
Magic Mark (5/2) - No wins since August 2016. He always seems to be part of the mix late, but cannot get the job done.
Make It a Triple (15-1) - In his last 3 dirt starts, he is 3-1-1-1. The concern is the lack of route starts. There must be a reason that in 17 races, he only shows one start at a mile. He didn't run bad in that lone route try.
B Squared (7/2) - Midpack runner will receive a good trip here off a moderate to fast pace. The April 14 score in a dirt sprint is noted, as he defeated Make It a Triple. He seems like a safe pick for this $10 refund promotion, as he can probably pick off enough horses to hit the board at least.
Grecian Fire (9/2) - Despite 15 lifetime starts, this will be only his fourth dirt start. He does own a win on dirt, although his numbers immediately improved on turf. While it would not be a surprise to see him win, he is untrustworthy.
Grazen Sky (12-1) - Trainer Rob Hess is 0 for 14 at Los Al over the past year. His form this year is a bit shaky, as he has failed to finish better than third.
Continental Divide (20-1) - On TimeformUS, he has yet to break 100. With that said, this is a young 3-year-old colt who can move up.
Conclusion
Leaning towards
B Squared right now. We'll see.
