Bertrando Stakes at Los Al (Today, Race 8)

This is part of the TVG promotion where a $10 win bet can result in a refund if the horse finishes 2nd or 3rd.

Let's give it a shot.

Taman Guard (8-1) - Toss out the turf experiment. But even so, he tends to fade in the lane, and lost by over 19 lengths in his last one-mile race. Pass.

Soi Phet (3-1) - Old timer just won a 100k race. Unfortunately, this is a heavy fan favorite, which usually results in an underlaid price. His 8-4-2-0 Los Alamitos record is obviously respected though.

Magic Mark (5/2) - No wins since August 2016. He always seems to be part of the mix late, but cannot get the job done.

Make It a Triple (15-1) - In his last 3 dirt starts, he is 3-1-1-1. The concern is the lack of route starts. There must be a reason that in 17 races, he only shows one start at a mile. He didn't run bad in that lone route try.

B Squared (7/2) - Midpack runner will receive a good trip here off a moderate to fast pace. The April 14 score in a dirt sprint is noted, as he defeated Make It a Triple. He seems like a safe pick for this $10 refund promotion, as he can probably pick off enough horses to hit the board at least.

Grecian Fire (9/2) - Despite 15 lifetime starts, this will be only his fourth dirt start. He does own a win on dirt, although his numbers immediately improved on turf. While it would not be a surprise to see him win, he is untrustworthy.

Grazen Sky (12-1) - Trainer Rob Hess is 0 for 14 at Los Al over the past year. His form this year is a bit shaky, as he has failed to finish better than third.

Continental Divide (20-1) - On TimeformUS, he has yet to break 100. With that said, this is a young 3-year-old colt who can move up.

Conclusion

Leaning towards B Squared right now. We'll see.

I went ahead with the win bet on B Squared even though he was 2-1. Soi Phet nosed him out of the win though.

But I got the $10 refund for 2nd at least lol.

Go back and watch the replay. Be Squared absolutely threw anchor when he made the lead. Ears straight in the air, waiting on rivals. Actually dropped back to 4th for a stride or two then got back to work to get beat an inch. An older horse like him should know better than pull that kind of crap. Brutal beat for you. You deserved the $10 refund.

Sort of agree here, stretch run looked strange to me for both horses. Thought the 6 was the winner the whole way.
