My hoops watching days.............

This is a really good thread. I really did a double-take when I saw the picture above. There must be thousands like it in family rooms all over this country. Every high school shooting guard has at least one memorable game in his career, and they memorialize that event by framing their local newspaper's article about it and displaying it among all the pictures of family and friends that we put on display in our homes.

My high school sports career was one of spectating. I got to see Wilt Chamberlain lead Overbrook High to a win over my Allentown (Pa.) High School team in the annual Eyeglass Fund charity game. I was standing for the whole game, three deep in the balcony of the "Little Palestra". I recall that Overbrook had a red-headed point guard leading their fast break, and AHS played a "collapsing" defense against Wilt. A few years later, I was sorting mail over Christmas break with a guy who played in that game. "I fouled him six or seven times myself," is what I remember him telling me.

I also saw Billy Packer (Yes.......that Billy Packer) launch his jump shot in the Palestra. A three point line did not exist then, but he would have lobbied for a six and nine point line. No distance was too far for him.

Great memories.............JK

this is Willie Allen - either the greatest or 2nd greatest player to ever come out of my County

dunking in 1966 in high school - there weren't even many NBAers dunking in '66

Willie was the first black player ever to play for Miami and one of the first black players to play in the deep south for a major college

he is Miami's 2nd all time leading rebounder behind Rick Barry

he played in the ABA for a short time

I got to see Austin Carr play for his h.s. a few times
he was by far the best h.s. player I ever say

it was astonishing to see a 16 year old with such a complete command of the game of basketball

when he did this I was so happy and proud for DC and for his tiny h.s. - Mackin

61 points in an NCAA Tournament game

a record that still stands today more than 50 years later

one of the memories of Austin:

right handed - he would usually take a few shots with his left hand

you almost never see a h.s. player do that

and rarely see an NBA player do it

not sure if this works, but this is a piece of what was recorded from 1997? basketball/recording session w/ "Monk" - and I get a shoutout!; (explicit content warning / n-word)

We played about 20 min and the score was 2-2 in a stalemate. He was very strong and could dunk from a standstill.

A few years later, I was at his house, and he had a VHS of a HS player dominating and dunking highlights. I was surprised, it was him!

Had he pointed that way from a young age, - could have been a good Wide Receiver in the NFL. I don't what became of him.
