The Casino “Dicks” Came Lookin’ For Me

That morning, I immediately went to the casino cage. I recall I was playing “short.” At most, I had $60 dollars in my wallet. I threw the $60 down. “Chips,” I said. There were two young women “behind bars” handling the exchanges. As they’re getting ready to give me my chips, I’m thinkin’, “I’m gonna have to make do. I probably shouldn’t even be here. But I promised ‘yo-eleven man’ I’d shoot craps with him this morning.” I planned to play Freehold that afternoon. I was at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun.

As I’m standing there waiting for my chips (I’m half in a daze from the hour-and-a-half ride from my home to the casino), I notice that one of the young women who was putting chips on the counter had suddenly turned into an ATM machine-gone-awry. As she continues to place a handful of “greens,” a bunch of “reds,” and a few “whites” down, I can’t contain myself. I’m thinkin’ “What the hell is going on here? It ain’t my birthday. I’m not the millionth customer to enter the casino. Then what?” Then, it dawned on me. These two women are “newbies.” New hires. And their supervisor is nowhere in sight. In any event, instead of 60-dollars-worth of chips, she’s given me over $200! I hightailed it out of there faster than an Olympic sprinter coming out of the blocks.

As I head to the craps tables in the Casino of the Sky, I know that the casino will, sooner or later, find the error. I’m hoping it will be later, but I’m not that naïve to think that it won’t be sooner. Two thoughts cross my mind: (1) Get the hell out of there! Foxwoods will take Mohegan Sun chips and (2) Go into the men’s room and see if I can’t somehow “re-arrange” myself (most difficult unless I had a “change of clothes”). I decide to do nothing. In any event, I meet up with “Yo-eleven man” to shoot craps.

Ten minutes goes by. Nothing. Twenty minutes goes by. Nothing. When I shoot, I’m putting everyone in the game. “Two-way hard eight,” I say. I’m putting my buddy “Yo-eleven” in the game, but also the dealers (“da boyz”). I was tempted to call over to the nearby Johnny Rocket’s and say, “Do you want to be part of the game?” I was flush with cash. I was indeed playing with “house money.”

I can’t recall if I nailed the hard-eight (“Eighters from Decatur”), but a few moments later, I see a “posse” comin’ toward me. They picked up my scent like a bloodhounds on steroids.

Seconds later, they confront me. We move about 15-feet away from the craps tables. “Are you the guy…?” Before the lead-guy can finish, I fess up. I believe someone asked, “Did you know you were overpaid?” I said, “Yes.” What can I do? They’re “Kojaks with a Kodak.” I remember one guy commenting, “Too bad you couldn’t have made some money.” (I was losing).
I had enough to cover “the overage.” When all was said and done, I was left with about $35.

As soon as “The House” got their money back, they left. Hey, it wasn’t my fault. Yeah, I coulda played “Honest Abe,” but the temptation to be flush with cash (“chips) was too great.

I do remember going over to “The Sun’s” race-book that afternoon to play Freehold and some “flat” tracks. If I remember, I left the place with “chump change.” What had begun as an eventful morning turned into an uneventful day.

Of course, there was the time that I had a tax ticket that I couldn’t cash. That’s a story for another day.
