25 years ago today: RUBY RIDGE

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the ambush by US marshals and the FBI on the Weaver family that left his wife and 14 year old son dead. Here is an article from 15 years ago retelling the events of that two day assault. They even killed the family dog.

There's a really good documentary about Ruby Ridge on Netflix, as least there was as of a few months ago.

A tragedy on both side, but the marshals never should have been there. Randy Weaver was as small time as they come, and his "crime" was about as serious as a traffic offense. As the article in the OP says, the government ended up paying the family millions to settle the case.

"Crooked" requires thought and planning. This whole incident was pure incompetence.

This thread reminded me of a book I read some time back called "Cold Zero", written by a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team sniper. He was at Ruby Ridge and at Waco, another major government fiasco.

The detailed narrative gave a lot of insight into the workings (or non-workings) of the government in such cases. I was particularly struck by the lack of emotion or opinion on the part of the author, like it was just another day at the office.

If I recall correctly... Weavers Offense was a set up as well. An UCA under cover agent... talked him into cutting the barrel of a shotgun down to just under the limit. I'm sure the money did little to easy the pain of his lose.
