They're extremely happy with the surface. As far as I know there haven't been any euthanized.
The petition is close to 50K to end horse racing in Ca. And they are lying about the number last year saying 27 were euthanized. IMO they should start a petition for Ca. Racing and have TVG, the ADW's, and the Tracks sending emails and even having Trevor ask everyone at the track to use their phones to vote for California Racing.

As opening weeks go, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club had what can only be described as a roller coaster last week.
Excerpt:
Thumbs down to the California Horse Racing board and the track stewards they employ for not scratching newly announced geldings right before a race like Saturday’s fifth race winner Trapalanda. The CHRB and stewards are here to protect the bettors and for the second time in the last two months a horse was announced as a gelding 20 minutes before they entered the gate. The last time it happened at Santa Anita the gelding won the race leading to a huge Pick Six single-ticket payoff. It didn’t do that on Saturday, but anyone who wagered on the Pick Five got screwed.
Excerpt:
We didn’t have a fatality on the new dirt track and the (parimutuel) numbers were good.”

That's a fine thing to say given what happened last year and that this year the surface has been ultra safe. Several races have been run at 6 furlongs and I haven't seen one do that this year. Could the gap be improved upon? Maybe.
And by the way Jon Lindo is absolutely, positively on fire this meet https://twitter.com/JonLindo60

“That’s the most dangerous post position anywhere on the track at Del Mar,” Baffert said. “He had been used to running outside. But there’s a gap in the rail there (about 30 yards after the start, according to track stewards), and he saw that opening.”

I see Norberto Arroyo is no longer riding for Peter Miller and split with his agent/brother.
I hope I'm wrong but I can't see this ending well.

I welcome the track safety numbers but it's worth remembering that nobody's ever invented a safe dirt. We're almost certainly on the positive side of the variance curve here.

The track is noticeably slower this year than it was last year. I think that is intentional helping.
Nobody has invented a safe turf or synthetic surface either. Horses die and get injured if they race. It is part of the game. It is never going to go away.
