I sort of think the entire deal has outlived its purpose. It’s basically a hype machine now.
There’s two other issues involved here. If people raise objections to bringing their horses to SA and if the state steps in before hand. If California starts meddling and indications are they are on the brink. Then the “ you know what” really hits the fan.
It’s hilarious how people still think this is just going to go away out there. The stats and all the crap people quote means not a God Damn thing. It’s political and a public spectacle now.

Everyone always claims the BC had this intention to showcase different tracks, but it isn't really true. The intention of Gaines was to hold them mostly in California where there would be good crowds and good weather. He said this in 1983 and 1984, and three of the first four were in Southern California.
A couple of things happened to change things: (1) breeders pushed to hold it at Churchill (which actually didn't even have a turf course and couldn't host it when the BC started), and small tracks started bidding for it and offering better financial terms to the BC (which the BC has finally turned away from).
But no, the original intent was this was going to be held in Southern California a lot.

I remember Belmont park when they hosted the BC and that was the year that they had a horse(Mr Purple ?) had a heart attack or something during a race and it was the same year that Go For Wand had that horrific breakdown and that day has faded into the past but I think the SA deal is in the paper almost everyday and has been reported on constantly that this is a different situation.

Only the BC Classic is on NBC. The rest of the races are on NBCSN, and nobody except the diehard horse racing fans will probably watch it.
As far as the race goes, I doubt it will move because it does bring significant money to the area.

That was one guy. It has been at every region in the early years. Good luck with Southern California. At this rate by next year this time it may be banned.

Maybe so.
Look, they should get the BC out of here. But nobody should appeal to original intent- there was no ORIGINAL intent to "spread the BC around".

Funding for the Breeders’ Cup, John Gaines reasoned, was to come from having each registered sire donate one stud fee per season to the cause, while each Breeders’ Cup-nominated foal contributed a flat fee to the fund. Gaines cleverly incented owners and racetracks by returning some of the money to increase purses and create prestigious races, while rotating the Breeders’ Cup from track to track to keep local racing associations happy.

There are a lot of articles of John Gaines' vision for the BC, none of which comport to your view???

Breeders' Cup locale decision on June 27th
A decision on whether Santa Anita will retain the 2019 Breeders' Cup is expected at a Breeders' Cup board meeting on June 27.
The 2019 Breeders' Cup is scheduled for Nov. 1-2.
“I think it’s fair to say our board will have a full report from management on everything we know about the situation in California as well as injury rates at other racetracks and we’ll have to evaluate that situation and what our options are," Breeders' Cup President Craig Fravel said Sunday. "That’s really ultimately a board decision, so I have to defer to that process."
In April, Fravel said he was "evaluating contingency plans" for the Breeders' Cup in light of Santa Anita's fatalities. Two months later, it appears those contingency plans begin and end in Louisville.
"We have not explored options other than Churchill Downs," Fravel said.

That article was written in 2011 and doesn't contain any quotes from Gaines on the subject. It was also in a New York paper.
You need to look at California papers in 1983 and 1984.

That's not the point. The point is that three of the first BC's were here and our papers were replete with statements from BC officials about the big crowds, good weather, and general suitability of California tracks to host the event. They said they would be out here a lot. I remember one specifically where they compared it to the Super Bowl, which is almost always held outdoors in warm weather.
What happened was that the BC got away from that model later on for other reasons, and the idea that the intent was to move it around a lot was retconned.

From your lips to the BC' ears, Andy. They can't take the risk of holding it here.

Picked up hotel rooms in The 'Ville on Monday.
There isn't much left downtown if you want a suite(s), and prices are on the rise. I'll be surprised if it stays at Santa Anita.
Hopefully our tickets get some semblance of the same seats at Churchill. The meeting on 6/27 will certainly be interesting.

Do we know if it is moved that it would be on the same dates? Feels like Churchill BCs have always come a week later that SoCal ones but maybe they'd leave it the same since it is already scheduled.

I assume it would be. A whole bunch of foreign racing interests make travel plans for it.

Going back and looking at the dates it looks as if CD had always held the BC the first Friday* and Saturday in November and it looks as if SA was the same with the exception of 2003(Oct 25th) and 2008(Oct 24,25).
* two day event began with Monmouth in 2007
But it looks as though it was either the last weekend in Oct or the first in Nov no matter where it was held.
Hollywood park owns the distinction of the latest the BC was run. In 1984 it was run November 10th and in 1987 it was run November 21st!
