I paid $2.99 and 9/10ths for regular yesterday in Niles, Illinois. If I traveled an additional 4 miles...I would have saved 20 cents a gallon...but I said, what the heck. I had lost $1,000 that day at the track...what would saving 20 cents a gallon do for me?

Well heck, gas prices are back over $2.50 per gallon here in NE Texas, 60 miles SE of Dallas. Supposedly the rise in prices is due to recent rises in crude oil prices and refineries drawing down inventory.
Refineries are realizing large profits recently, and capitalizing on those excess profits by using more oil and drawing down inventories (supply and demand profit mentality) while supposedly gearing up for higher demand in mid-summer, thus, artificially increasing demand even though gasoline sales nationwide have been falling!
So, we as consumers have reduced our demand at the pump, but the refineries are using more crude oil, drawing down inventories and creating a need for increasing inventories (which means using even more oil in the future), and calling it "demand". At least this is my understanding, after doing some research on my own. We have had reduced gasoline demand at the pump recently, nationwide, and yet the refineries are using more crude oil in order to capitalize on higher prices.
I choose to call that "artificial demand increases" and "price gouging" by the refineries. You call it what you wish.
Previous projections called for lower gas prices throughout the summer, however, due to what the refineries are now doing, some are projecting even higher gas prices throughout the summer.
This should be illegal and punishable by law, IMO. But, I'm a just a simple person!

Crude has declined 25% in the last six weeks.. gas prices are responding, but very slowly. In my area of upstate NY I'm still seeing prices in the $2.70 range. At this price of crude, gas prices should be much lower than that
