I don't know much about Andover and North Andover but Lawrence is an old mill town where much of the housing stock is around a century old or older.IIRC, Lawrence is also the poorest city in the state so there's probably not much financial incentive for the local gas company to upgrade and/or inspect equipment.Really odd situation.

I live right next door in Tewksbury. I work in Andover and got an alert earlier that the building is closed but I don't know the status for tomorrow. I could smell smoke earlier this evening. Scary stuff. I hope no one was hurt but I haven't heard of any injuries or fatalities yet. Many prayers to those affected.
Lawrence is a poorer community but Andover and North Andover are very wealty areas.

News outlets are saying the gas company sent excess pressure into the system causing leaks.

This happened in Rochester in 1951. My mom was a public health nurse and was sent to the fire station to help treat the injured.
"On Sept. 21, 1951, three people died, 40 were injured, 19 houses were destroyed and 25 others seriously damaged after an explosion in a gas-pressure regulating station at the Twelve Corners allowed natural gas to flow into houses at a much higher pressure than normal.
Shortly after 1:15 p.m., houses began exploding in rapid sequence in the Meadowbrook, Roselawn and Bel-Air tracts.
.
.
.
Could it happen again?
No, RG&E officials have since explained, because of improved gas regulators in houses and better regulators and relief valves in the distribution system."

Wow. I never knew that.
I am very familiar with those areas.
I was only 3 months old then.
