I experienced the complete opposite!

Now, it could have been about the expectation of tourist dollars, but often I was the quintessential broke college kid.

My take is that The Ugly American image was mostly in the minds of Americans who were, in fact, pretty ugly in their treatment of others.

Buy a clue, TJ! Capitalism doesn't work that way. Austerity would mean lower demand, which drive prices up, not down!

And how would there be "more for us"? Are the "us" exempt from practicing austerity? Only "them" will be required to practice it, so that the "us" would get the goodies?
