Dominguez on Saturday

This Saturday, Ramon Dominguez is riding the full card at Belmont, then somehow is going to be at Prairie Meadows that night in time to ride Hansen in the Iowa Derby and also in the Cornhusker. Not exactly a hop, skip and a jump. I hope the Hansen connections booked a private plane for him. Can't say these jockeys don't work hard.

He'll have 5 hours to get there. Do they pay these jocks something win or lose? Always wondered.

I think the jockey gets 10% of what the purse pays in the position he finishes. So there is a lot of incentive to win. But I think there is a rider's fee per mount that ranges from $25 & up. Could someone confirm that?

In a case like this I imagine that Ramon will be paid well, even if he doesn't win. As independent contractors, leading riders can negotiate all manner of arrangements, above and beyond "standard" compensation.

Not what I meant. I was referring to an agreed upon price to ride out of town.

I know Hansen is an important mount. It just seems like a long way to go. He's not exactly driving over the George Washington Bridge to the Meadowlands. I don't know how many direct flights there are from New York to Des Moines. There could be delays, weather, connecting flight at O'Hare. I'm sure Ramon and his agent wished he were running in the Dwyer instead.

Do you really think that he's flying Delta out of Laguardia?

Ramon's star is about to explode, this exposure can do nothing but help him.

The standard is to pay 10% for 1-3 instead of 10% for just 1st. The owner also usually pays for the expenses such as plane fare and hotel.

Don't quite understand what you mean by "ABOUT to explode." 2010,2011 Eclipse awards for best jockey: 2010,2011 top money earning jockey both years; 2012 George Woolf Award winner.

We never asked for upfront money but it's not unusual or frowned upon. Deal would be 10% accross the board and all expenses.

I'd often take a shot by asking if the riders could fly first class. In most cases that was granted.

It's werid, sometimes I still feel like Ramon flies under the radar in NY due to some of the big names in the colony (Bel, Sar). Also in the winter when most of the top connections are at Gulfstream, he's still grinding it out in the cold at Aqueduct. I know he that he's starting to rack up the hardware, but I'm just not sure he's thought of as highly nationally, as he is in NY.

But this is my own perception.

Why first class? They don't need the legroom and probably can't eat the meal.

I was wondering the same thing. Been a number of years since Ramon was "about to explode".
