Opened back up, but just on the training track.
Have to believe they will miss more than a weekend of racing? I guess we'll see.

SA famous for their thin dirt to create incredible times is having horse breakdown issues? I am shocked I tell you, shocked!
Add an inch of dirt, run slower, have less breakdowns.

Both Santa Anita and Del Mar have gone with a deeper cushion for almost 2 years now.

not really, most discount some of the winners there since it was synthetic.

So this is not a new thing.
Aqueduct went through it not that long ago.
What was the final deal there?
I know they eliminated certain low-class races, but anything else?
Was there a tack problem that was fixed?
Did just cutting out the bottom levels fix it?

This was already done at both Santa Anita and Del Mar. Take a look at the times Justify ran last year, and for example the entire Santa Anita Derby card. This isn't SoCal racing of the 80s and 90s.

Yep.
Santa has actually turned into one of the deeper tracks in the country.
Of the premier tracks, maybe only Saratoga is deeper?

This. I was quite skeptical myself but needed no more convincing after Accelerate posted a pokey raw time facing West Coast in the Awesome Again.
It's not like it hasn't rained in Santa Ana before so perhaps the alterations made safety worse. Kind of like how NASCAR put restrictor plates in for Daytona and Talladega resulting in slower speeds but more wrecked cars.

never let facts get in the way of a good story
anyone that follows SA, and Del Mar, knows they have slowed the tracks way way down...if anything with the rain that could be the problem.

This is the same problem that generated the mandate that all Cal tracks switch to synthetic a few years back. Fatalities did drop then. Studies show dirt tracks have more fatalities than turf and synthetic. Studies also show that sometimes they just come in bunches like they did at S.A. No big surprise.

Did they look like Barry Bonds?
Were they on meds like Lasix?
Did they have chemists making their "food"?

Your suggestion about lasix, if it were outlawed, would require that U.S. trainers get a clue about management of bleeding.....like the rest of the trainers in the world.
I think that learning curve would be too much for many of 'em.

Remember when Gulfstream Park West was Calder? The track records down there were a joke!
Give me fewer fatalities over faster times any day.
