"Tragedy unfolded in the closing stages of the $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) for 3-year-old sprinters Saturday at Saratoga Race Course when favorite New York Thunder appeared en route to a clear victory but fell near the sixteenths pole. The Nyquist colt suffered a catastrophic injury to his left front fetlock and was euthanized on the track.
Jockey Tyler Gaffalione was on his feet and walked to an ambulance."

Eerily similar, both undefeated, both coming off significant tops on 4 weeks rest and both showed a bit wider spacing in previous efforts.

They should end it. Too much bad weather, they can't keep the track consistent. Do what Churchill did move the rest of the meet. The optics give the impression that NYRA doesn't care about the horses

Come on. They literally have another track that will be racing in a few weeks. They can shut it down for a week or two and run the last stakes there.

NYRA, HISA officials, NYS Gaming Commission and the NYS Equine Medical Director are meeting and will make a decision about all of the Saratoga racing surfaces before tomorrow card. CEO David O’Rourke says they look at the data and decide how/if to move forward.

this sickening incident has nothing to do with the track surface.
cutting the purses would be a great first step to alleviate some of the problem that exists, maybe even a lot of the problem.

The thoroughbreds of past were less than 14 hands, now they measure mostly 15 to 17 hands. Race horses have been bred to be fragile and too big.
