Message from the Commissioner

Mike's a little nuts but this industry needs some big changes. Hiring Pat Cummings was smart.

His question "are we willing to work together?" is kinda dumb because if people were willing to work together we wouldn't have these problems in the first place.

Actually it is the racing industry that does nothing. Why doesn’t the man or anybody (decision makers) from the racing industry come into this forum address horse players?

As far as Pat Cummings is concerned, if he cannot come out and say rebates have to go, then what exactly can he do to reverse the negative trajectory this industry is on.

This industry doesn't want to face reality. People keep talking about what's wrong with the industry and what we can do to fix it, but they remain in denial about each fix either costing a lot of money the industry doesn't have, that it would likely cause a lot of short term pain no one is willing to deal with, or both. Racing operates like the Federal Govt does budgeting except racing can't print money and blame inflation on someone else.

Didn't Satish Sanan crash his boat on these exact same rocks some years ago? I recall several appearances on Steve Byk's podcast talking about all of this, and with a lot less showy bravado. IIRC, he literally just gave up.

At least the guy is trying. This could fail or if it succeeds will certainly evolve with him or without him.

People love to throw stones, what do you suggest ?

A big thing that is causing tracks to close is the small amount of $ they get when someone bets on their signal via ADW. If tracks got a similar % of handle when someone bets on their signal via ADW compared to on track Golden Gate would probably not be closing and many other tracks would be doing much better than they are. We would not rely nearly as much on casino subsidies.

If only you had told people this in 1995. It’s a little late now:-)

All the tracks not owned by the big 3 could join together, bargain for better rates. Come opening day at the Keenland spring meet, do the ADWs have a choice but to cave?

I thought you were a guy who reposted links to be an influencer in horse racing, but all this time you were an expert hardliner organizing strategist.
